Comprehensive noise management

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a recognized occupational health risk in the international mining industry due to the high noise levels generated by mining equipment and processes. The damaging impact on workers’ hearing and the related effects on their quality of life are well-documented, adding socio-economic burdens for both individuals and their families. Leveraging the expertise and experience of our specialists, BBE offers a range of services to help mining operations develop comprehensive hearing conservation programs and adopt Codes of Practice to effectively reduce worker noise exposure.

Some of our services include

Assist mines in the development of Noise Code of Practice (CoPs).

Review noise CoPs employed currently at the mine and assess its alignment with legislation.

Assess the effectiveness of protective, preventative and mitigating measures adopted by the operation. This includes considering the introduction of quieter equipment or task methodologies , the selection and use of hearing protection devices, and training of workers against NIHL.

Review the status of implementation of any IBMQI (Buy and Maintain Quiet Equipment) initiative in force at the mine.

Perform on-site observations aimed at verifying the implementation of all relevant actions and initiatives, including:

  • Noise source measurements and noise zoning.
  • Noise exposure measurements.
  • Instrument calibration certification.
  • Equipment noise emission certifications (from manufacturers and suppliers).
  • Use and effectiveness of screens or noise abatement systems (where used).
  • Analysis and use of collected noise data (e.g.: personal exposure and environmental noise).
  • Communication of this data and information between the occupational hygiene, medical surveillance functions and mine management.
  • Review  reporting systems and provide guidance on the inclusion of improvements if deemed necessary.
